Life in the UK test
?xml:namespace>
If you are applying for naturalisation as a British citizen or for indefinite leave to remain, you will need to show that you have sufficient knowledge of life in the United Kingdom.
?xml:namespace>
The requirements (language requirement and knowledge of life in the UK requirement) were introduced for naturalisation on 1 November 2005 and then for settlement on 2 April 2007.
There are two ways in which an applicant can meet the requirements:
?xml:namespace>
1. Obtaining an ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) qualification with citizenship content or
2. Obtaining a life in the UK test certificate
?xml:namespace>
Applicants whose English is at ESOL level 3, will need to take the Life in the UK test in one of the many UK Test centres. Applicants are advised to revise the 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship' handbook which will contain all the information necessary to prepare for the exam.
The test is computer based and consists of 24 questions. The cost is £34 and results will be released to applicants the same day. The test can be taken as many times as necessary and no particular time limits apply.

ESOL

ESOL and Citizenship classes improve applicants’ knowledge of life in the UK as well as their English language. Courses generally cover:
· Speaking and listening
· Reading and writing
· Punctuation and grammar
· Vocabulary
· Citizenship materials

Exemption from the life in the UK Test
?xml:namespace>
You may apply for an exemption if you are aged 65 or over, or have a long term physical or mental condition that prevents you permanently from learning English. You will need to provide proper evidence from your doctor.
?xml:namespace>
Illiteracy, temporary illnesses and qualifications would not normally be grounds for exemption.
?xml:namespace>
If you failed the test you can take it again after 7 days. However you may need to apply for further leave to remain ( an extension) if your existing leave is close to expiring.
