It was announced that the government’s plans for presenting identity cards for British Citizens is to become ‘scrapped’ within 100 days.
Having said this, the National Identity Register which holds personal details of each cardholder is also going to be destroyed with the first piece of legislation, which will be introduced to the parliament around August.
Nick Clegg (Deputy PM) said: 'The wasteful, bureaucratic and intrusive ID card scheme represents everything that has been wrong with government in recent years’.
However, this change will not affect the UK Border Agency's programme of biometric residence permits, which will continue to be issued.

Detention of children in Dungavel ends
The Home Office has announced that children of failed asylum will no longer be detained overnight at Dungavel immigration removal centre. Many families detained in Scotland may undergo health and welfare screening and will then be moved to Yarl’s Wood centre which consists of specialist facilities i.e. support services. This change is portrayed as a ‘positive outcome’.
Immigration minister Damian Green stated: 'This work has now started, because it is in all our interests, including those children currently in detention, to do it quickly, but to also do it well and safely."
