More than 300,000 immigrants had entered the
UK on Student Visas over the last year which suggests an increase in their figure by more than a third, elevating the need of a renewal for the Immigration Law.
A rise by more than 75,000 within 12 months in the number of overseas students was affirmed notwithstanding the peculiar need for College and University places that the
UK students tackle today, official statistics suggests.
This ‘invasion’ worsens even more as the figures reveal that an extra 31,000 dependents accompany those students.
Further more, 313,011 overseas students were approved visas during the 12 months leading up to March who were accompanied with about 31,385 dependents indicating a 32 per cent increase on previous year’s figures, as the Home Office admitted.
Although the immigrants’ entry to the
UK increased gradually under the Labour’s government, last year’s figures have showed the largest rise on record.
The Points-Based System which was proposed by the Labour party was thought to make it more challenging for unskilled immigrants to enter the
UK. However, there seems to be a loophole in the Points-Based System making it easier for immigrants to enter the
UK on Student Visas.
Despite the fact that applicants gain 30 points for being confirmed a course offer from a College or University and 10 points for demonstrating that they are capable of paying their fees and supporting themselves independently, a student only needs 40 point to become eligible for a Student Visa to the UK which is extremely easy to achieve.
On 30 July, Damian Green, the Immigration Minister, promised a comprehensive reassessment of the rules associated with Student Visa following his agreement that the student system had been exposed to “significant abuse”.
At a time of cutting budgets of Higher Education, many overseas students aim to enter the
UK to study acceptable degrees which is a productive source of income for Universities. About a third of the
UK’s Universities are considering admitting more overseas students starting from September, as a recent research identified.
In addition to admitting overseas students to traditional Universities, thousands of others have been accepted by 600 “lower tier” colleges which are easier to hold an offer from whilst their students get certified with Bachelor degree as well.
More over, some students are permitted to work in the UK after being qualified in subjects such as circus skills, acupuncture and ancient medicine that some Universities offer, regardless of their specialties which are ‘needless’.
Still, about 4,000 illegal immigrants are believed to have benefited of bogus colleges to sneak into the
UK.
The British Government aims to attract the brightest students who will give their best to the country and to guarantee that every one who enters the
UK is sincere. However, it only welcomes legitimate students who will not seek abusing student route, therefore; Damian Green announced on 30 July: “I am undertaking a thorough evaluation of the student system over the coming weeks and months and I will introduce new measures to minimise abuse and tighten the system further”, as well as Sir Andrew Green, Chairman of the campaign group Migration Watch, : “There is growing evidence that the new points-based system has provided a back door to Britain for bogus students”.
