·         Husband, wife or civil partner or

·         Unmarried or same sex partner and

·         Child under the age of 18 (or if already in the UK as dependents, then they can be over 18)

A dependent can join the Migrant in the UK provided

·         They obtain a visa for this purpose and

·         They can be supported by the migrant without recourse to public funds

Maintenance

The maintenance requirement stipulates that the migrant has £533 for each dependent accompanying or joining him/her in the UK. The money must be in the migrant’s or dependents bank account for a period of three months before the date of the application.  Alternatively, the migrant’s A rated sponsor should provide a written undertaking to maintain and accommodate the family member until the end of the first month of employment should it become necessary to do so.

Are Dependents allowed to work?

Dependents are allowed to work but not as doctors in training. Also, dependent children are able to work although they must still be dependent on the migrant (main applicant).

Supporting evidence

The types of documents the dependent may need are as follows:

·         Letter from the main applicant’s sponsor

·         Personal bank statements covering the three months before the application

·         Letter from Bank confirming funds and that they have been in your account for duration of three months before applying

·         Building Society passbook covering the three months before the application

·         Letter from a Financial Institution regulated by the Financial Services Authority confirming funds

·         Marriage certificate (for spouses)

·         Birth certificates (for children)
