Worker Registration Scheme

Members of Accession 8 countries that joined the European Union on 1st May will need to register under the Worker Registration Scheme to work for an employer in the UK for more than a month.

The Scheme applies to residents of the following countries:

  • Czech Republic
  • Estonia
  • Hungary
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Poland
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia

 

Registration

Workers from the above countries must register on the Worker Registration scheme within a month of joining a new employer.

Exemptions

 Applicants do not have to register if they:

·         are self employed

·         have been working legally in the United Kingdom for 12 months without a break in employment;

·         are providing services in the United Kingdom on behalf of an employer who is not established in this country;

·         have dual citizenship of the United Kingdom, another country within the European Economic Area (EEA) that is not listed above, or Switzerland;

·         are the family member of a Swiss or EEA citizen (except the countries listed above) and that person is working in the United Kingdom; or

·         are the family member of a Swiss or EEA citizen who is living in the United Kingdom as a student, or a retired or self-sufficient person.

 

Application Form

Applicants need to complete application form WRS.

Documents required

The applicant must provide:

·         A valid passport or ID card

·         A letter from thier employer confirming employment.

·         Two identical colour passport sized photographs

·         Wage slips/letter from employer/contract of employment

·         Home Office Fees

 

Duration

Applicants will be issued registration certificate for a period of 12 months. Applicants who continue to stay in employment with an employer continuously for 12 months without interruption will be eligible to apply for an EEA residence permit confirming their right to live and work in the UK.

 

Changing employer

Applicants must apply for a registration certificate authorising them to work for their new employer.
 
Employer responsibilities
Employers are responsible for ensuring that any workers employed by them have the legal right to work in Great Britain and that they have registered with the scheme.
